INNOVATIONS IN SMART CITIES DEVELOPMENT
Otto Poon C.F. Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University strives to develop cutting-edge smart-city technologies and to provide smart-city solutions to Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. This presentation introduces the developments of the SCRI in supporting logistics facing latest challenges in Hong Kong. First, we have been working with Hong Kong Construction Industry Council to push forward the industrial application of the advanced Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) technology. Backed by the SCRI’s mobile mapping and 3D GIS technologies, we developed an open-source platform to provide better logistic planning during MiC, especially for handling the inability to pass narrow road sections and junctions in the high-density city during the transportation of oversized modules. Second, we developed advanced models to predict the short-term spatiotemporal risk of COVID-19 symptom onset in different countries, regions, and cities, specific to their current epidemic situation, pattern of human mobility, and prominent virus variants. We have been predicting the COVID-19 risk in global locations, including popular origins and destinations of Hong Kong maritime transport, to help logistic companies to make safer route plans.
